Songs for Ritual Use

This section contains a selection of favorite songs and chants from various Wiccan and pagan traditions. Where the author or source is known, it is given; all others are "just floating around out there." The chants are given first, then the songs follow.

Songs and Chants from All Over

The Goddess Chant:

Isis, Astarte, Diana,
Hecate, Demeter, Kali;
Inana!

Weaving our Web:

We are the flow and we are the ebb;
We are the weavers, we are the web.

We are the weavers, we are the web;
We are the spider, we are the thread.

We are the spider, we are the thread.
We are the witches, back from the dead.

Weave and spin, weave and spin;
This is how our work begins.

Mend and heal, mend and heal;
Take the dream and make it real.

Strand by strand, hand over hand;
Thread by thread, we weave the web.

The Goddess and God:

Powerful moon of radiant light
Weave us a web that spins the night;
Web of stars that holds the dark,
She is the power that feeds the spark.

Powerful sun of radiant light,
Weave us a net that holds us tight;
Net of light that feeds us all,
He is the power that heals and calls.

The Circle of Life:

We all come from the Goddess,
And to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean.

We all come from the God,
And to him we shall return
Like a spark of flame,
Rising to the heavens.

Hoof and horn, hoof and horn,
All that dies shall be reborn;
Corn and grain, corn and grain,
All that falls shall rise again.

The Ritual Circle:

We are a circle
Within a circle,
With no beginning,
And never ending.

The circle is open, but unbroken;
May the love of God and Goddess be ever in our hearts;
Merry meet, and merry part, and merry meet again.

The Elements in Our Lives:

Air I am, fire I am,
Water, earth, and spirit I am.

Air moves us, fire transforms us,
Water shapes us, earth heals us;
And the balance of the wheel goes ’round and ’round,
And the balance of the wheel goes ’round.

Earth my body, water my blood,
Air my breath, and fire my spirit.

We Are United:

We are one with the Lady, we are one with the Lord;
We are one with the Lady, we are one with the Lord;
And we know that earth's balance will one day be restored,
And they'll know we are witches by our love, by our love,
And they'll know we are witches by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,
And together we'll spread the news the Goddess is in our land,
And they'll know we are witches by our love, by our love,
And they'll know we are witches by our love.

All praise to the Lady from whom all things come,
And all praise to the Horned Lord who makes us one,
And all praise to the people for joy and creation,
And they'll know we are witches by our love, by our love,
And they'll know we are witches by our love.

(This song also works if the last two lines of each verse are
"And they'll know we are Pagans by our hugs.")

The Kore Chant

From the Reclaiming Community of San Francisco

The rhythms of the choruses and the verses of this chant are set so they can be sung on top of each other -- which actually makes the whole thing sound wonderful, and also makes it a lot of fun to do.

Choruses:

She changes everything she touches, and
Everything she touches changes.
(Repeat)

Change us; touch us;
Touch us, change us!
(Repeat)

Verses:

Her name is not forgotten,
She spins the thread of seasons;
Her power is to open,
Her promise will never be broken.
(Chorus)

Everything lost is found again
In a new form, in a new way;
Everything hurt is healed again
In a new time, in a new day.
(Chorus)

All seeds she deeply buries,
She weaves the thread of seasons;
Her secret darkness carries,
She loves beyond all reason.
(Chorus)

All sleeping seeds she wakens;
The rainbow is her token;
Now winter's power is taken,
In love all chains are broken.
(Chorus)

On the same wheel we spin,
Into life and out again;
One to many, many one,
Brewing in her cauldron.
(Chorus)

We are of the body of the earth,
The earth is of the body of the stars;
We are stars that circle
From life to death to birth.
(Chorus)

Rising, rising,
The earth is rising;
Turning, turning,
The tide is turning.
(Chorus)

(And, finally, just for fun:)
It changes every time you sing it, and
Every time you sing, it changes.
Sing it, change it;
Change it, sing it!
(Chorus)

Circles

Verses 1-4 & Chorus © Copyright 1979, Gwendolyn Lee Zak;

Verse 5 by Ann Cass; tune – "Windmills" by Alan Bell

In days gone by, when the world was much younger
Man wondered at spring born of winter’s cold night:
Wond’ring at the games of the moon and the sunlight,
They saw the Lady and the Lord of all life.

Chorus:
And around and around and around turns the good earth;
All things must change as the seasons go by.
We are the children of the Lord and the Lady,
Whose myst’ries we know, but we’ll never know why.

In all lands the people were tied to the good earth,
Plowing and sowing as the seasons declared:
Waiting to reap of the rich, golden harvest,
Knowing her laughter in the joys that they shared.
(Chorus)

In Flanders and Wales and the green hills of Ireland,
In the kingdoms of England and of Scotland and Spain,
Circles grew up all along the wild coastline,
And worked for the land with the sun and the rain.
(Chorus)

Circles for healing and working the weather,
Circles for knowing the moon and the sun,
Circles for thanking the Lord and the Lady,
Circles for dancing the dance never done.
(Chorus)

And we who reach for the stars in the heavens,
Turning our backs on the fields and the groves
Still live in the love of the Lord and the Lady;
The greater the circle, the more the love grows.
(Chorus)

(Alternative second line for the last verse:
"Leaving behind the fields and the groves")
