List of Useful Books
Books of historical interest to Wicca:
- Aradia: Gospel of the Witches,
by Charles G. Leland; Phoenix Publishing, 1990.
This is claimed to be a book describing the Craft of the
witches of Tuscany, the "strega." It contains the piece
of lore that became the Charge of the Goddess.
- The God of the Witches,
by Margaret Murray; Oxford University Press, 1952.
This is a semi-biased anthropological account of the Craft
in early and medieval Europe. Its scholaship has been
criticized, but it remains a key book to understanding
our history.
- The Witch Cult in Western Europe,
by Margaret Murray; Oxford University Press, 1921.
This book is full of quotes from original sources about
the history of the Craft in Europe. However, they are
not translated -- one needs to read English, French,
German, and Middle English to understand everything in it.
- The Sea Priestess,
by Dion Fortune; Samuel Weiser, 1993.
This novel is one of the most important early works about
the Craft by a woman whose influence on it continues today.
