List of Useful Books
Christian books of importance:
- Living in Sin?
by John Shelby Spong; Harper and Row, 1990.
This book, written by a bishop in the Episcopal church,
is an excellent study of just what is wrong with the
Christian Church's beliefs and rules about sexuality.
- Original Blessing,
by Matthew Fox; Bear Press, 1983.
Father Fox, a former Catholic priest, expresses in this
book his philosophy that we are not born into original sin,
but rather into original blessing -- an attitude with which
we heartily agree.
- The Poisoning of Eros,
by Raymond Laurence, Jr.; Augustine Moore Press, 1989.
This is a history of the way the Christian Church has
transformed culture’s view of the erotic from one of joy to
one of fear, anger, and retribution.
- Sexual Intimacy, Love and Play,
by Andrew M. Greely; Warner Books, 1973, 1975.
Father Greely is a Catholic priest whose attitudes towards
sex and sexuality are positive. This book, a combination
of two earlier books, is a description of his ideas in
this area.
- Situational Ethics,
by Joseph Fletcher; Westminster Press, 1966.
This book by a Christian theologian expresses the (then)
radical concept that the rules guiding our behavior are not
carved in stone, but rather are dependent on the situations
which cause the behavior.
